Guangdong Engineering Polytechnic is an engineering-based vocational college of higher learning, which also offers arts, economics and management courses. The college is affiliated with Guangdong Provincial Ministry of Education. Founded in 1958, formerly known as Guangdong Adult University of Science and Technology (GAUST), GEP has a history of 56-years. It has successively produced more than 60,000 professional and technical talents to our country. The college is affiliated with Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, and is run under the guidance of Guangdong Provincial Bereau of Education. Professor Liu Renhuai, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, is the honorary president of GEP.
Aiming to high employment rates, to produce both professional and morally qualified graduates who can meet the requirements of both modern industries and our society, GEP has been pioneering in exploring a model to produce high-skilled personnel to meet the requirement of modern industries. Han Qide, Zhang Yutai, Deng Nan and other leaders from Chinese Association for Science and Technology,and Zhu Xiaodan,Chen Yunxian and other Guangdong Province have come to GEP successively for inspection and supervision. They all gave the high appraisement to the development of GEP.
It is one of the first two vocational colleges which are offered the Guangdong provincial funding based on the number of students enrolled; the only province-granted public service experimental unit of higher institution, and also the experimental college of Modern Apprenticeship. In 2013, our college was listed by Ministry of Education among one of the Top 50 Chinese Colleges whose graduates got the highest Employment Rate.“GEP is the model vocational college in Guangdong Province.” “ A civilized unit in Guangdong Province.”and so on.
The college covers 1228 acres, with an enrollment of 11,499 full-time students, area of training place 116,156 square meters, inside-school training bases 15 and off-campus training bases 193, (among which 2 are sponsored by the central government fond and 3 by the provincial fond). GEP has a reserve of more than 487,000 books. GEP has 606 faculty and staff , among whom, 508 are full-time faculty , 255 are multi-professional teachers, accounting for 50.2% of the fundamental course teachers. There are 324 teachers who have acquired master or doctorate degrees, taking up 63.8% of the young teachers. To meet the personnel training need of work-integrated learning, 288 experts have been invited from enterprises and firms to be GEP part-time teachers who will help to build high-quality practice-oriented courses which require more practical skills and craftsmanship..
Our college has 12 departments and 34 majors. Among them, the elevator engineering technology and architecture engineering technology are brand majors enjoying a good reputation both in the province and the nation.
Our college has its unique style in deepening the college-enterprise cooperation, getting graduates employed, as well as setting off their own careers. It has comprehensive cooperation relations with a variety of domestically and internationally renowned enterprises such as Schindler Elevator, Beijing Carved, Silitek Electronic, Guangri Logistics, Honda Motor to achieve the bi-directional communication of equipment, capital, technology, teaching and administration personnel, and the formation of the “Five Pairs of Mutual Connections” of major setting vs. industry development; personnel training vs. enterprise demand; curriculum setting vs. vocational posts demand; graduation internships vs. employment; teaching personnel vs. enterprise human resource, therefore greatly enhancing the quality of its graduates.
The college has put great emphasis on college-enterprise cooperation and mechanism innovation. Cooperating with Schindler Elevator (Chinese office), one of the world’s top 500 enterprises, our college initiated the major of elevator engineering technology in China (which is now outside the National List of Majors ), and set up the nation’s first elevator technology institute, focusing on training high-end technicians of the elevator industry. Our college is a good example experiencing educational model of college-enterprise cooperation. From its initiation, five consecutive sessions of graduates are employed by internationally renowned enterprises as the Schindler (Swiss)、Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport etc. The college has actively put forward the institutional and intensive education model. Cooperating with Genyuan investment companies and other enterprises and public institutions, the Guangdong Vocational Engineering Education Group came into being in 2012.
The college has set up its Asset Management Co. LTD; the Guangdong Engineering Vocational Educational Development Cooperation which cooperates with Genyuan investment companies; also there are a group of institutes which are independent legal entities while affiliated to the college. These institutes are Guangdong Energy-saving and Emission Reduction Technology Institute, Guangdong Construction and Engineering Design Institute, and Guangdong Institute of Engineering Environmental Purification Technology, all of which set up a substantial platform for the cooperation between the college and the enterprises. The college has a perfect environment of starting one’s own careers, and is the nation’s first employment-oriented (getting employed by others or themselves) campus. With the establishment of the nation’s first national-level employment guidance studio, employment culture square, innovation culture square, etc., it has a high-quality professional employment guidance team, with more than 100 professional instructors, accounting for a quarter of all in Guangdong Province. All these formed a solid foundation for the high-quality employment of its graduates.
Our college has been actively providing services for social good and regional economic development. It offers community-oriented continuing education training, skills identification and technical services, etc. There are 11 vocational skill identification stations in our college, covering 56 trades / positions, among which, the National Machinery Industry Occupational Skill Identification Station in Guangzhou is the nation’s first campus-stationed elevator industry identification unit; its campus-based testing and training station of the Major of Secretary is the only authorized site by the National Committed of the Association of Chinese Higher Education in southern China. The college is the continuing education base designated by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology and Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology. It is also the Professional and Technical Personnel Continuing Education base authorized by Guangdong Provincial Human Resources and Social Security Department.
Our college takes great efforts to do two things to build its employment brand of high-quality graduates, namely, improving both its education and employment services. In recent years, our students have made outstanding achievements in skill competitions of various levels and kinds. The employment rate of graduates has always been above 99%, with employers’ satisfaction rate above 90%, which ranked among the top in the similar colleges. Enrollment and employment are both booming. Our college has repeatedly been awarded “The Advanced Unit of Graduates’ Employment in Guangdong Province”, “National Advanced Unit of Graduates’ Pre-conscription Work”. It has been awarded the title of “The Civilized Unit of Guangdong Province” issued by the Guangdong Provincial Working Committee for 15 consecutive years. Since 2010, our college has been recommended by the Education Bureau of Guangdong Province to the National Educational Ministry to be “the Model College of Graduates’ Employment” for three consecutive years.
During the “Twelfth Five-year Plan" period, seizing the great historical opportunity of Guangdong Province’s, developing itself to be the most important center of vocational education base in Southern China, our college carries on the development strategies of being content-focused, quality-prioritized, characteristic-based, high end-oriented and internationalized. With the support of Guangdong provincial Association for Science and Technology, motivated by innovation and creation, pushed forward by deepening the four sided cooperation of the college, enterprise, industry and the government, our college takes great efforts to build a quality project focusing on the enhancing “majors, team, courses, platform, management". At the same time, our college will do our best to be the national model base of school-enterprise cooperation and the model vocational college in Guangdong Province.
